We are truly an International School and we are uniquely placed to promote a sense of ‘International-Mindedness’ in our students. We are proud of our German heritage and our strength in teaching languages which enhances intercultural learning and lays a great foundation for the Diploma Programme (DP). At DSB, we continually celebrate the diversity amongst our staff and our student body. The IBDP is an extremely demanding course, and we are rightly proud of the support structures that we have in place for our students. We have small class sizes ensuring, more opportunities for one-on-one time with teachers. All students have a personal mentor and weekly IB Skills lessons. Their journey from choosing university placements to sending off their applications is individually supported by our excellent university guidance counsellor and her company The Red Pen. At every stage of the way, we ensure that our curriculum supports the mission of the IB and the development of the IB Learner Profile
There are over 200 IB Schools in India. What makes us special at DSB is our commitment to the IB philosophy and delivering the IB Diploma Programme in the spirit in which it is intended. The IB is an inclusive organisation and the IB Diploma Programme is developed to provide enriching learning opportunities for all students - not just the academic elite. Whether a student scores 45 points or 14 - the learning journey of the IBDP will set them up for success in life. We believe this because the IBDP is a globally recognised, pre-university course. Research suggests that IBDP students have numerous learning outcomes that are superior to students who study various national curricula. The IBDP offers its students a much greater educational emphasis on individual initiative, personal responsibility, and creative and critical thinking, which are all skills with increasing importance in the modern workplace.
The IBDP is an academically demanding programme in which students select one subject from each of the key subject areas. The six subject areas are listed below with the subjects offered at DSB. We are proud of our rich offer, but in accommodating the limits of our small size, we focus on ensuring we offer subjects that are necessary for university studies. Our IB Diploma subject offering ensures students have the requisite subjects for entry into any leading university course internationally. Our commitment to high quality pedagogy ensures that the DSB Curriculum delivers an IBDP Programme through which are woven the attributes of the IB Learner Profle. Our planning for learning, explicitly addresses the IB Approaches to Teaching and Learning, and the holistic development of learners.
The six subject groups with the subjects offered at DSB are:
Group 1: Studies in Language and Literature: English A and German A.
Group 2: Language Acquisition: English B, German B, German ab initio, French B and Hindi B.
Group 3: Individuals and Societies: Economics, History and Geography.
Group 4: Sciences: Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Design and Technology.
Group 5: Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches, Applications and Interpretation.
Group 6: The Arts: Visual Arts, Music
All subjects are offered at Higher and Standard Level (HL & SL) except German ab initio and Mathematics Applications and interpretation which are only offered at SL.
Instead of Visual Arts students may pick a second subject from group 2,3 or 4 subject areas.
Students must pick three subjects at HL and three at SL.
Additionally, all students study Theory of Knowledge (TOK), embark on an independent research project, the Extended Essay and commit to the Creativity, Activity and Service (CAS) programme.
All students are enrolled on the IB Diploma in line with the IBO guidance - but may have the option to drop to being course candidates if it seems more appropriate to them at a later date.

German Learning
DSB International School started life as the German School of Mumbai and most locals still know us as the ‘German School’. Whilst we are the British school in Mumbai, we retain a deep commitment to the learning of the German Language and strong connections to the local German community and the Indo-German Chamber of Commerce. We are supported in the learning of German through being a German Foreign Office (ZfA) recognised ‘DSD Schule’, and a member of the PASCH network. This means our students can receive the German Government recognised German language exams DSD1 and DSD2 - the latter being sufficient for study at German universities.
The educational value of learning any foreign language is immense. German has particular use to our community as it is a passport to outstanding German universities - many offering free education. More important still, is the chance to remain in Germany after university studies to find employment in one of the world’s leading business and industrial economies. If you wish to find out more about studying in Germany please contact our University Guidance counsellor Birgit: birgitbery@dsbindia.com
Students start learning German as a foreign language in KG and continue till Grade 8 with most building on this and achieving impressive results in German as a Foreign Language at IGCSE and IB Diploma Level. Many students take the IGCSE one or even two years early, achieving top grades. Students joining us much higher up the school can still make impressive progress by starting in year 11 with the IB German ab initio course.
Our mission is to ensure all our long-term learners reach high levels of German. By the end of Primary, we expect all to have reached at least A1 level which enables them to have basic conversations. By Grade 8 some are already being entered for the IGCSE and by grade 10 all should be able to do the DSD1 which is a B1 or intermediate qualification - evidencing a good command over the language. Our best learners, as well as scoring excellent grades in the IB, can take the DSD2 C1 qualification which German universities recognise as being sufficient for them to actually do their university studies in German.
For German mother tongue speakers we provide German throughout the school, and from grades KG to Grade 8 some additional subjects in the language. For this, we base what we teach on the Curriculum of the German State of Thueringen. This is the curriculum adopted by German Schools overseas. German-speaking students take German as a First Language IGCSE and German A: Language and Literature at IB Diploma level.
